I’m happy to announce that beginning in Fall 2020, The University of Texas at Arlington will have a Popular Culture Minor.  Housed in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the minor builds on courses such as Introduction to Popular Culture (SOCI 1310) already offered at UTA.

Popular Culture Minor official

Over the past two decades, employers and governments have emphasized the role of the “creative class” and the no-collar workplace in the new economy. Students who earn a minor in Popular Culture Studies will be able to demonstrate creativity to potential employers. Whether students seek employment in the creative industries (video games, music, film, social media, etc.) or other employment areas, they will be able to look at complex problems and develop innovative solutions. This minor will provide students with the opportunity to critically analyze popular culture, its production, consumption, and reception from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Students will be directed towards jobs in Arlington, Texas – the entertainment capital of North Texas. The city of Arlingtonis home to AT&T Stadium, Texas Live!, Six Flags Over Texas, Globe Life Park, eSports Stadium Arlington, The Dallas Wings, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Levitt Pavilion, International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame, a growing downtown district, and more.

Students interested in the minor should contact Dr. David Arditi or advisor LaDorna McGee
